Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Biggest risers

Nathan Eovaldi, Tyler Glasnow, Jorge Soler, Bryce Miller, Esteury Ruiz, Jose Siri, and Ezequiel Tovar all saw the most significant increases in our June rankings compared to where they sat in May. Matt McLain, Christopher Morel, and Bobby Miller also saw nice jumps, cracking the top 300 after failing to make the cut in previous editions. Let’s take a look and see how these players have fared so far in 2023 and what to expect moving forward.

Nathan Eovaldi, SP, Rangers
May Rank: 200 Updated ROS Ranking: 67

Eovaldi has been one of the best pitchers in baseball and has allowed just nine earned runs over his past eight starts. The 33-year-old righty is 8-2 with a 2.24 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and a 77:14 K: BB across 80.1 innings. His 4.6 BB percentage is in the 88th percentile, while his xERA has dropped from 4.31 in 2022 to 2.95 in ’23. Eovaldi signed a two-year, $34 million deal with the Rangers this offseason, and so far, he’s been worth every penny. He’s established himself as an elite fantasy option and could climb in the rankings if he continues to pitch at this level.

Esteury Ruiz, OF, A’s
May Rank: 271 Updated ROS Ranking: 144

Ruiz continues to flash his elite baserunning ability and leads the majors with 28 stolen bases. The 24-year-old speedster is slashing .267/.329/.347 with one home run, 25 RBIs, 25 runs, and a .308 wOBA across 60 games. His sprint speed is in the 98th percentile, but he’s not making enough hard contact, shown by his 20.9-percent hard-hit percentage being in the one percentile. His proficiency on the basepaths continues to drive up his fantasy value. He should continue leading off and seeing plenty of opportunities with the rebuilding A’s. Ruiz will be a roto standout and a mainstay in the rankings as long he continues to be a threat on the basepaths.

Other Key Risers:
Hunter Brown, SP, Astro (May Rank: 213, Updated ROS Ranking: 116)
Tyler Glasnow, SP, Rays (214, 102)
Jorge Soler, OF, Marlins (217, 98)
Jose Siri, OF, Rays (239, 154)
Bryce Miller, SP, Mariners (259, 140)

Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Biggest fallers

Taylor Ward, Andres Gimenez, C.J. Cron, Jose Alvarado, A.J. Puk, James Outman, Tyler Stephenson, and Jose Abreu all saw the most significant decreases compared to last month’s ROS rankings. Let’s take a look and see how these players have fared so far in 2023 and what to expect moving forward.

Taylor Ward, OF, Angels
May Rank: 89 Updated ROS Ranking: 173

Fantasy owners were expecting Ward to build on his 2022 campaign when he slashed .281/.360/.473 with 23 homers, but that hasn’t been the case. He has struggled so far this season, slashing .241/.308/.354 with six home runs, 22 RBIs, 31 runs, and a stolen base over 54 games. The 29-year-old outfielder’s strikeout percentage has increased from 21.3 percent in ’22 to 22.8 percent in ’23, while his xwOBA has dropped from .361 to .318. However, Ward might be starting to turn things around at the plate, hitting .333 early in June. Ward has been disappointing so far, but maybe his recent surge in production will keep him ranked in the top 200 over the rest of the season.

Andrews Gimenez, 2B/SS, Guardians
May Rank: 110 Updated ROS Ranking: 195

Gimenez has been lackluster this season, slashing .249/.311/.363 with three home runs, 14 RBIs, 25 runs, and seven stolen bases over 220 plate appearances. Except for sprint speed, most of the 24-year-old infielder’s Statcast page is blue across the board. His hard-hit percentage has dropped significantly from 37.8 percent in 2022 to 21.4 percent in ’22, while his BB percentage has dipped from 6.1 to 4.1. His exit velocity has also decreased from 87.8 percent to 84.3. Gimenez racked up 17 homers and stole 20 bags last year, making him an intriguing top-100 player heading into this season’s fantasy drafts. We might be starting to see glimpses of that form, as Gimenez is hitting .333 with three extra-base hits, a pair of runs, and a pair of RBIs to start June. He might not fall outside the top 200 rest-of-season rankings if he can continue to wield a hot bat.

Other Fallers
C.J. Cron, 1B, Rockies (May Rank: 119, Updated ROS Ranking: 248)
Jose Alvarado, RP, Phillies (122, 233)
A.J. Puk, RP, Marlins (133, 268)
Jose Abreu, 1B, Astros (190, 286)
Tyler Stephenson, C, Reds (174, 270)

Notable Injuries

Injuries continue to pile up throughout the season, as Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins (groin), Dodgers lefthander Julio Urias (hamstring), and Red Sox southpaw Chris Sale (shoulder) recently landed on the injured list.

However, we did also see some returns. White Sox reliever Liam Hendriks (illness) struck out cancer and made his triumphant return last Monday. Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) and Padres star third baseman Manny Machado (hand) were activated from the injured list on Friday, and Guardians righthander Triston McKenzie (shoulder) dazzled in his season debut on Sunday.

Some of the most significant injuries in May were Dustin May (elbow), Max Fried (forearm), Nick Lodolo (calf), Jazz Chisholm Jr. (foot), and Drew Rasmussen elbow). All are out for multiple weeks and might not return until late June or the All-Star Break.
