New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe is quickly shaking off a stomach bug and against the Arizona Diamondbacks, was immediately involved in one of the wildest plays in recent memory.

After sending a rocket up the middle in the top of the third inning to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead, the Bombers had runners on first and third with one out. Catcher Austin Wells lifted a ball to left field, just deep enough to score Alex Verdugo.

Volpe took this chance to move to second on the throw home. It seemed like a simple enough play even when testing the arm of left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

Then, all hell broke loose.

Gurriel’s throw was way up the first baseline, going all the way to the Yankees dugout. Volpe then made his way to third as pitcher Ryne Nelson collected the wild throw. He made a throw of his own to third base as Volpe slid in, but that too was wild.
