Once the undisputed super lightweight champion, Josh Taylor has had an active year outside the boxing ring. Now “The Tartan Tornado” is ready to return to his spot as the top dog in boxing on June 10.

Taylor defends the WBO and Ring super lightweight belts against Teofimo Lopez inside Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. The fight airs on ESPN in the U.S.

In 2021, Taylor held all the gold. He defended the belts against Jack Catterall in February but benefitted from a controversial split decision and fans clamored for a rematch. That never came to fruition, as Taylor suffered injuries.

Unmotivated by a trio of mandatory assignments, Taylor relinquished three belts in succession.

For Taylor, the Lopez fight may be the one to get him back on track.

“Given what I’ve achieved in 19 fights, I need fights like this that are going to get that fire in my belly and the nervous butterflies that keep my motivation going, my hunger going, and the fire burning in my stomach,” Taylor said to Sky Sports.

“Boxing at Madison Square Garden where everyone dreams of boxing, and I’ve always said that I want to box there one day, I’m just so buzzing to get over there and get stuck in amongst it.”

Lopez is also looking to return to the spotlight. “The Takeover” beat Richard Commey in 2019 for the IBF lightweight title, and Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 for the WBA, WBO, and Ring belts. Sidelined after testing positive for COVID-19 and going through some promotional difficulty, Lopez lost the championship to George Kambosos Jr. in 2021.

This fight, in a new division, is Lopez’s chance at redemption.
