The outspoken Teofimo Lopez is not mincing his words as he attempts to hold gold again, at the expense of Josh Taylor, on June 10.

Taylor defends the WBO and Ring super lightweight titles against Lopez at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. The fight airs on ESPN in the U.S. and Sky Sports in the U.K.

Lopez is a former lightweight champion who defeated Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 for the WBA, WBO, and Ring belts. However, success was short-lived and he lost the belts to George Kambosos Jr. in 2021. Following a bout of COVID-19 and some promotional difficulties, Lopez has finally found a home at super lightweight, winning two in a row.

Willing to do whatever it takes to win, Taylor resorted to describing this fight (while relating to the death of Filipino boxer Kenneth Eganoas) as a “kill or be killed” contest.

“I want to kill Josh Taylor. What the f— does that mean? People, [tell me], like, ‘Let’s get back to boxing.’ But that is boxing. That is what we signed up for. You’re probably going to lose your life… When I fought [Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020], I took his heart, especially in that 12th round… boom, I won the fight. With Taylor, he don’t got no heart. So what can I really take from this man? His life. His life. The only way I’mma make a statement is by doing that. I’m not sorry about that,” Lopez told Punsh Drunk Boxing via Boxing Scene.

Taylor is not interested in the same approach. The former undisputed champion was stripped of several belts when a rematch with Jack Catterall didn’t come to fruition. He wants to hold all the gold again, and eventually make an impact in another division. “The Tartan Tornado,” who recently walked off an interview with Lopez, believes he will have the physical and mental edge in this fight.

“I’m mentally stronger than all my opponents. I’m a mental fortress,” Taylor told Fight Hype via Bad Left Hook. “I’m mentally stronger than just about anybody I know, and all my opponents as well…(Lopez) got doubts, he’s got self-doubts, but he obviously displayed that in public to the whole world. He’s now spinning it off as a reverse psychology kind of thing, which I don’t think he’s smart enough to do. He was speaking on emotion there. So he’s definitely got those huge self-doubts and does seem a little bit mentally fragile. But you take it with a pinch of salt, I’m preparing for the best version of Teofimo Lopez, which is a dangerous guy. So I’m fully switched on here.”
