Bangladesh are anxiously waiting over Tamim Iqbal’s fitness ahead of the one-off Test against Afghanistan following the recurrence of his back issue. Tamim’s lower back pain returned following his training session at SBNS on June 7 and he was rested as a precaution.

Tamim did not train with his team mates as he was seen doing physical activities with BCB’S rehabilitation center head Julian Calefato while the rest were involved in warm-ups. Afterwards Tamim was seen practicising catches alongside trainer Nick Lee and at one point, his discomfort was very visible as he refrained from attempting difficult catches.

The opener began his batting session against the throw down specialist but he never looked to be at his best when he went to bat against the pacers as well as the spinners.

Tamim was struggling against Taskin Ahmed and Khaled Ahmed and was seen holding his back at one point. Though he didn’t have any problems driving on the front foot, he was struggling while batting on the back foot and it remained the same when he was batting against the spinners.

“Yes, he is having some back pain and that is a concern,” Habibul Bashar, BCB selection panel member, told Cricbuzz on Monday. “If there was a fracture or tear in that case you could say that he is out for two to four weeks but that is not the case with him and in the past we have seen that this pain had gone away. So we will have to wait and see and hope for the best.”

It is understood that Tamim, who was having some stiffness while batting on Monday, is keen to see how he copes while training at SBNS on Tuesday (June 12) and in case the discomfort persists, he might inform the team management about his immediate plan of action. Habibul insisted that if Tamim eventually fails to make the cut, they have backup opener Mahmudul Hasan in their 15-member squad.
