Fred Couples, one of the biggest names in the Galleri Classic, pulled out of the event Friday morning, hours before he was set to tee off in the first round of the PGA Tour Champions event in Rancho Mirage.

Couples, who withdrew midway through the second round of last week’s senior tour event, spoke with media on Thursday and said his back still wasn’t feeling right, but planned to give it a go this weekend.

Couples, a World Golf Hall of Famer who won the Masters in 1992 and was ranked No. 1 during his PGA career, will be replaced in the field by alternate Scott Dunlap, a 60-year-old former pro who resides in Georgia. Dunlap will be paired with Retief Goosen and Justin Leonard.

The Galleri Classic runs from Friday through Sunday at Mission Hills Country Club.
