Bayern Munich are ready to step up their efforts to sign Amadou Onana from Everton as the Bundesliga club looks to add a defensive midfielder to its squad in the summer.

Onana, 22, has admirers in the Premier League after arriving at Goodison Park from Lille at the start of last season for £33 million, with Bayern ready to join the race for the Belgium international should he become available.

The German champions have been assessing the summer window with inquiries over which players could be on the market, with defensive midfielder an area they are looking to strengthen.

Joao Palhinha, the Fulham midfielder, was a target last summer and he had a medical before the move collapsed with his club unable to sign a replacement in time to cover for his loss. Palhinha has since signed a new contract at Craven Cottage and remained wanted at Bayern this season, although other players such as Onana have impressed them.

Onana has enhanced his reputation on Merseyside while playing in a struggling team, playing in 22 Premier League matches and scoring three goals in all competitions. He started in the 2-2 draw against England on Tuesday and is expected to play at the European Championship in the summer.

With Everton fighting for Premier League survival, their top-flight status is likely to determine which players could leave this summer. As reported by Telegraph Sport this week Jarrad Branthwaite is being monitored by Manchester United.

Onana is also an asset who is likely to cost more than £60 million on current market values. He is a younger age profile to Palhinha and has potential to increase his value further.

In his first year in the Premier League he was subject of interest from Chelsea, who were willing to offer players in return for the Senegal-born player. But no agreement was made between the clubs and Onana stayed with Everton.

This summer is expected to be a busy window for defensive midfielders, with Adrien Rabiot also on a free transfer which will interest top clubs in Europe should he leave Juventus. His Italian club themselves are in the market for a player in that position.

Bayern ended up signing Eric Dier in January and while the England international can play in front of a back line, he has been deployed as a centre-back during his time in Bundesliga. Aleksandar Pavlovic, 19, has emerged as a player of huge promise in central midfield but they are expected add competition in that area.
