Carlos Carvalhal has departed Celta Vigo by mutual agreement.

Portuguese coach Carvalhal, who has had previous spells in charge of Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City in Britain, took over at Celta in November 2022.

He led them to safety on the final day of the season with a 2-1 win over Barcelona at their Balaidos stadium. The victory meant that they finished 13th, three points ahead of relegated Real Valladolid.

A Celta statement read: “The club wants to express its sincere gratitude to Carvalhal and his assistants for the professionalism and honesty they showed since their arrival last November in Vigo.

“We wish the best of luck to the Portuguese coach in his professional and personal future, in addition to thanking his work and dedication shown daily during these eight months.”

Carvalhal — whose departure from Celta has been described as amicable — is now looking for a new club ahead of next season. He has managed Portuguese sides Rio Ave and Braga, and Abu Dhabi-based Al Wahda since departing Swansea in 2018.
