Sevilla have extended the contract of Europa League-winning head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar until the end of next season.

Mendilibar, 62, joined Sevilla on a short-term contract until the end of the season in March, replacing Jorge Sampaoli.

Sampaoli had himself only been appointed in October last year following the sacking of now-Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Julen Lopetegui but was unable to stem the flow of poor results. The 63-year-old was relieved of his duties following Sevilla’s 2-0 defeat to Getafe.

Mendilibar took charge with Sevilla 14th in La Liga, only two points above the relegation zone with 10 matches to play.

The former Alaves and Eibar coach was able to quickly turn around Sevilla’s form and the Andalucian side finished 12th, nine points clear of the relegation places.

Mendilibar also played a large part in Sevilla’s Europa League run, which included knocking out Manchester United and Juventus at the quarter-final and semi-final stages respectively.

Sevilla then faced Roma in last Wednesday’s final in Budapest and won 4-1 on penalties, with the match finishing 1-1 after 120 minutes.

Mendilibar’s record at Sevilla stands at eight wins, six draws and three defeats.
