Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham has been named Bundesliga player of the season.

The England international’s impressive campaign saw him score 14 goals and provide seven assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

Dortmund fell agonisingly short of a first title since 2011-12 with a draw on the final day allowing Bayern Munich to pass them and retain their crown.

Upon accepting the league’s highest individual honour, Bellingham heaped praise on his teammates.

He said: “Every year or half year that I’ve played at the club, my responsibility in the team has increased,” he explained. “I have to continue to be everywhere on the pitch and try my best to contribute going forwards and backwards and try and control games, try to dominate the midfield.

“My teammates, the coaches, and the staff have helped me develop. I came to the club as a talented lad, but I have added elements to my game that have taken it to the next level and I think that is down to them mainly.

“I have put the work in, but it is them that have put me in the environment to make it happen. They have added a kind of leadership role to my game too. I want my teammates to see that I am always doing everything I can to make sure we win. If we lose a game I am the worst person.”

Bellingham joined the club in the summer of 2020 from Birmingham City a month after signing his first professional deal with club.

He has since gone on to become one of the German club’s most important players, making 132 appearances, scoring 24 goals, providing 25 assists and captaining the side on several occasions this season.

The 19-year-old has been linked with a move away this summer, with Real Madrid in pole position to sign the teenager as reported by The Athletic.

However, sporting director Sebastien Kehl said last week that Dortmund are yet to receive any proposals from any other club for him.
