Kylian Mbappe has claimed he is “very happy” at Paris Saint-Germain as speculation over his future continues.

Mbappe’s contract at PSG expires next summer but contains a clause that gives him the option to extend it until 2025. The France international has, though, informed PSG that he does not want to exercise that clause.

Mbappe has until July 31 to make his decision but informed the Ligue 1 champions via a letter that he won’t be doing so on Monday.

PSG insist they have no intention of allowing one of the world’s best players to leave for free when his deal expires after next season, sparking talk of a sale this summer.

However, Mbappe posted on social media on Tuesday that he is “very happy” and intends to stay.

In response to a story linking him with an offseason transfer to Real Madrid, Mbappe tweeted: “LIES. I have already said that I will continue next season at PSG where I am very happy.”

Earlier on Tuesday, a statement to AFP on behalf of Mbappe claimed that no discussions over a renewal have taken place. PSG called those claims “emphatically untrue”.

These are the latest moves in what could be a lengthy back and forth this summer with all possibilities still on the table.

Madrid remain long-term admirers of Mbappe and came close to signing him last summer before the 24-year-old performed a dramatic U-turn to remain in Paris.

He scored 29 goals in 34 league games in the 2022-23 season, winning his fifth Ligue 1 title with PSG and his sixth overall.

Mbappe has since seen team-mate Lionel Messi leave for MLS side Inter Miami while Neymar’s future is far from certain.

What is the background to all this?

This is the third summer in a row where the relationship between Mbappe and PSG has teetered on the brink.

In 2021, PSG rejected an opening bid worth €160million from Real Madrid for Mbappe and then last summer, Mbappe stunned Madrid by signing a renewal at PSG. Last season, he excelled once more at PSG, but since the World Cup relations appear to have soured.

In April, Mbappe took umbrage when his image was used in a marketing video sent to PSG season ticket holders to try to coax them into a renewal. Some at the club wondered whether Mbappe was flexing his muscles with a view to securing greater flexibility in negotiations over a longer-term extension.

But it has not been the only signal of discontent from Mbappe. The striker was also unhappy last summer when PSG failed to recruit Robert Lewandowski and Aurelien Tchouameni. While his preferred option at centre-back, Milan Skriniar of Inter Milan, will only join PSG this summer as a free agent, after the club failed to secure him a year or six months earlier.

Now, however, another Mbappe saga has begun…
