The 2022/23 Champions League final pits Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City against Serie A giants Inter Milan in Istanbul.

City fought back to defend their Premier League title in the final weeks of the domestic campaign as Guardiola’s charges overhauled Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the run-in.

Guardiola’s men are now on the brink of a potential trophy treble, having beaten rivals United in the FA Cup final a week before taking on Inter.

Despite not being involved, Liverpool fans have a special connection with Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium, after their incredible 2005 Champions League final comeback win over AC Milan, but their Champions League fate for 2023/24 is already sealed.

Will Liverpool qualify for the Champions League if Man City win?

The short answer for Liverpool fans to this question is no.

After finishing fifth in the Premier League at the end of 2022/23, Klopp’s team missed out on a Champions League qualification spot, with Newcastle United making the cut.

The Champions League winners are guaranteed a place in the following season’s competition, but that is a safeguard against not qualifying via a league route, which City have already managed as Premier League champions.

Can 5th Premier League team qualify for Champions League?

Fifth place in the Premier League can equal a place in the following year’s Champions League, but only within a specific set of circumstances.

Liverpool’s win in 2005 was matched by a fifth-place Premier League finish, as local rivals Everton claimed fourth place, and an automatic spot.

UEFA granted Liverpool dispensation to defend their title, entering at the First Qualifying Round, with Everton joining at the Third Qualifying Round.

Liverpool went on to the Round of 16, losing out to Benfica, as Everton were immediately dumped out by Villarreal.

According to the European governing body’s tournament rules, if a team wins the Champions League and also qualifies for the competition based on domestic league finish, the unfilled spot goes to a different country that does not already have a direct berth in the group stage (Ukraine).

How 5 English teams can make Champions League

Although it is unlikely, there are two ways that five English teams can qualify for the Champions League.

The first instance is when a team that finishes outside the top four in the league wins the Champions League, as was the case for Liverpool in 2005.

The other possible way for five English teams to make the Champions League is for a club outside the top four winning the Europa League. Winning the Europa League grants automatic qualification for the Champions League group stage in the following season.

However, that will not be the case for a Premier League team in 2023/24, but Spain’s La Liga will have five teams in the competition.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad have confirmed themselves as the top four finishers in the Spanish top flight this season, but Sevilla’s Europa League final win over Roma has secured their qualification.
